They blame the media, voter apathy, and various other causes, all of which admittedly share the blame. But the truth is that the US has developed a society based on selfishness and self interest and reinforced it with ignorance, lack of education, and glorification of self righteousness. We are not a good people, on the whole.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This reflects again on my takes on politics and morality: conservatives, the ones motivated by &#8220;selfishness and self interest&#8221; and the profit motive, are winning. He had a lot to say. When he needed to run off to an appointment, I asked him if he\u2019d text or email me the rest of his thoughts. His response floored me. \u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cI better not. They may be reviewing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s \u2018they\u2019?\u201d I asked, suddenly worried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey! The university! The government! Gotta go!\u201d He was off.<\/p>\n<p>My friend has never before shown signs of paranoia.<\/p>\n<p>I relate this to you because the Trump regime is starting to have a chilling effect on what and how Americans communicate with each other. It is beginning to create mass paranoia, which is exactly what Trump intends.<\/p>\n<p>The chill affects the four major pillars of civil society \u2014 universities, science, the media, and the law.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reich goes on to explain why those institutions are so important.
