According to sources who requested anonymity for fear of retribution, staff were told today that the agency\u2019s 37 divisions\u2014across all eight NSF directorates\u2014are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced. The current directors and deputy directors will lose their titles and might be reassigned to other positions at the agency or elsewhere in the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>The consolidation appears to be driven in part by President Donald Trump\u2019s proposal to cut the agency\u2019s $4 billion budget by 55% for the 2026 fiscal year that begins on 1 October. NSF\u2019s decision to abolish its divisions could also be part of a larger restructuring of the agency\u2019s grantmaking process that involves adding a new layer of review. But she\u2019s a fanatical supporter of President Donald Trump, and that is apparently enough to get her tapped as the top federal prosecutor for Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/annabower.bsky.social\/post\/3looxvff4y22l\">announced Thursday night\u00a0<\/a>that he was appointing Pirro as interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, specifically praising her Fox News career. Earlier in the day, Trump indicated that he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/05\/08\/congress\/trump-eyes-withdrawing-ed-martin-nom-00335713\">planned to move on<\/a> from acting U.S. Attorney Ed Martin, another right-wing media figure, who appeared unable to muster sufficient votes for Senate confirmation. Well, it is news. Now, they\u2019re running local Republican parties in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/kandiss-taylor-globe-conspiracy-1234747197\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Georgia<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_cingraham\/status\/1912529329633808587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota<\/a> and seeking public office in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/01\/27\/aspiring-lieutenant-governor-penned-479-page-flat-earth-screed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alabama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A prominent far-right activist who has said, despite years of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/09\/02\/nyregion\/02conspiracy.html\">research and intelligence<\/a> establishing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/08\/technology\/loose-change-9-11-video.html\">otherwise<\/a>, that the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/laura-loomer\/trump-attends-911-anniversary-laura-loomer-who-shared-video-claiming-911-was-inside\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an inside job<\/a> by the U.S. government <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/13\/us\/politics\/trump-laura-loomer.html\">commemorated the 9\/11 anniversary<\/a> last year alongside President Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/rfk-conspiracy-theories-fact-check.html\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,<\/a> the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RobertKennedyJr\/status\/1903986030862127502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pledged the agency\u2019s<\/a> support last month for a fight involving so-called <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/04\/insider\/chasing-down-a-trail-of-climate-conspiracies.html\">chemtrails<\/a>, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/26\/climate\/geoengineering-conspiracy-theorists-skeptics.html\">debunked theory<\/a> that the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/11\/magazine\/contrails-planes-clouds.html\">white condensation lines<\/a> streaming behind airplanes are toxic, or could even be used for nefarious purposes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Conspiracy theories that were relegated to random and often anonymous online forums are now being championed or publicly debated by increasingly powerful people. Mr. Trump in particular has embraced, elevated and even appointed to his cabinet people <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/24\/business\/trump-misinformation-false-claims.html\">promoting these theories<\/a> \u2014 giving the ideas a persuasive authority and a dangerous proximity to policy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With examples. And ending:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr. Trump referred to \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-speech-political-rally-waco-texas-march-25-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demonic forces<\/a>\u201d on the campaign trail and called Democrats a \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i4lAAxJbPng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">very demonic party<\/a>.\u201d Days before interviewing both Donald Trump Jr. and Mr. Musk at Mar-a-Lago on Election Day, Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host, posted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/nation-world\/tucker-carlson-claims-he-was-attacked-by-a-demon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a YouTube video<\/a> claiming he had been attacked in the night \u201cby a demon or by something unseen.\u201d Dan Bongino, a right-wing pundit and podcaster who is now the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said on his show that \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/03\/nx-s1-5308020\/dan-bongino-trump-fbi-director-conspiracies-podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demon energy is real<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s no longer an abstraction \u2014 it\u2019s about straight-up demons,\u201d Mr. Carusone said. \u201cThe fever swamps are all of our reality right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Way back in the 1990s Carl Sagan published THE DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD. (My review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markrkelly.com\/Blog\/2020\/01\/31\/carl-sagans-the-demon-haunted-world-science-as-a-candle-in-the-dark\/\">here<\/a>.) Americans were settling into irrationalism even then. And before that, in 1980, was Isaac Asimov&#8217;s famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/456687-there-is-a-cult-of-ignorance-in-the-united-states\">cult of ignorance<\/a> quote. Is this something peculiarly American? I suspect not, just that it&#8217;s more visible in the US because it contrasts with our dominance and performance in scientific achievement, especially the big successful projects that NASA has pulled off, and technological achievements Americans have produced like the internet and the iPhone.
