Because others are just as certain about opposite things. And the world will not survive such conflicts of moral certainty; survival of the human race, in the long term, is about getting over tribal mentality. The morally literate, responsible, thing to do is to be certain of nothing, live your life by principles instead, and let others judge your moral maturity by your actions, and principles, not your commitments to this or that god or holy book.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Donald-Trump-2251825141-1536x1037.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Salon, Chauncey DeVega, 10 Mar 2026<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2026\/03\/10\/trumps-moral-crusade-is-dangerous-for-america-and-the-world\/\">Trump\u2019s moral crusade is dangerous for America \u2014 and the world<\/a>, subtitled &#8220;The president casts himself as the ultimate authority on good and evil \u2014 and believes it is his job to enforce it&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/topic\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> imagines himself as a moral crusader fighting the forces of evil at home and abroad. But his morality is not guided by ethics, humanism or respect for the common good. The president instead <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relies on himself<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, something he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/08\/us\/politics\/trump-interview-power-morality.html\">made explicit in a January 2026 interview<\/a> with the New York Times. \u201cMy own morality,\u201d he replied when asked if he observed any constraints on his power to use the military, including invading other countries. \u201cMy own mind. It\u2019s the only thing that can stop me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his mind, Trump is the beginning, end and final judge of what constitutes right and wrong \u2014 and he feels free to impose his dogma on America and the rest of the world. His is a totalistic mindset, and it\u2019s one of the defining features of a personality cult like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/topic\/maga\">MAGA<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the president\u2019s framework, \u201cgood\u201d is defined as those who support him and MAGA. \u201cEvil\u201d means those who dare to oppose him and his agenda. In this zero-sum view of the world, any perceived enemies must not merely be defeated but vanquished altogether. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, in the wake of Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2026\/03\/05\/trumps-new-plan-for-iran-doomed-to-backfire\/\">expanding war with Iran<\/a>, that framework has multiple faces at home and abroad.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Once again: certainty, intuition (no principles), zero-sum view of the world, good vs. evil. Trump, and by extension his supporters.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applied domestically, his belief is antithetical to American democracy and pluralism because it makes compromise, consensus politics and respect for institutions a virtual impossibility. You cannot negotiate with evil. Trump and other leaders on the right have repeatedly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/how-trumps-rhetoric-compares-to-historic-fascist-language\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attacked Democrats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, liberals, progressives and other perceived enemies as evil, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/donald-trump-rhetoric-enemy-anti-immigrant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poison in the blood\u201d of the nation and \u201cthe enemies within<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uh.edu\/~englin\/rephandout.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ctakers\u201d and \u201cparasites,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and as un-American traitors. These phrases are examples of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/link.motherjones.com\/public\/35215969\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stochastic terrorism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: language designed to inspire violence without directly ordering it. Research has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2022\/11\/5\/23441858\/violence-stochastic-terror-american-politics-trump-pelosi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this kind of rhetoric <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2024-60841-006\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encourages political violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and eliminationism.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Simplistic. Binary. Literal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Internationally, Trump\u2019s simplistic, binary moral framework undermines the rules-based international order because it negates the role played by shared interests, pragmatism and common values. As seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/topic\/iran\">Iran<\/a>, this mindset also encourages armed conflict and makes de-escalation difficult to impossible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Christian nationalists and eschatologists truly believe that Trump\u2019s war against Iran is not just a strategic necessity \u2014 it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2026\/03\/03\/military-officers-accused-of-framing-iran-war-biblical-mandate.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demanded by Biblical prophecy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2026\/03\/08\/trumps-misguided-christian-war-is-anything-but\/\">their interpretation<\/a>, such a war will bring about the prophesied End Times, the return of their God to Earth, the final defeat of evil and the Rapture of the saved.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They&#8217;ve been saying this for thousands of years. It&#8217;s never worked. Let&#8217;s call this&#8230; historical illiteracy. It&#8217;s a rejection of easily demonstrated principles of how history happens, how history is written down, how stories get made and remade and remade over the centuries to suit the taste of whoever is in power at the time. It&#8217;s to resort to the extremely naive claim that the King James Version of the Bible is true, because God dictated it. Pshaw.
