Here’s the first, I hope. (The embed function isn’t working. Copy this link into a new browser window.)

https://www.facebook.com/reel/1151334827418770

The gist is that ordinary natural selection would, many think, weed out any genes that don’t lead to reproduction. If homosexuals don’t reproduce (though of course some of them always have, by getting married anyway, or these days, through IVF), then how could it be genetically determined, in any way? I haven’t listened to the full series of videos, but what it boils down to, it seems to be, is an example of ‘group selection,’ an idea pushed by E.O. Wilson and others that nevertheless remains slightly controversial today. Anything attributed to group selection can be explained by individual selection, the critics say. Well, maybe. But except, as these videos seem to explain, for things like homosexuality, where the side-effects of same-sex attraction actually benefit a small population, the family or the community, even if those individuals don’t reproduce themselves. Instead they spend their resources supporting the family or community. The gay uncles, and so on. (Though I can’t hold myself up as a prime example. But my own uncle was.)

\\\\\\

Paul Krugman invokes William Gibson. Though only as an emblem.

Paul Krugman, today: Hack Apocalypse Now, subtitled “The dark side of AI is already here”

Like everyone who has been paying attention, I have worries about the possible negative effects from AI. And it’s a long laundry list of worries. One, there is the technology’s anti-labor bias, which may accelerate our downward spiral into oligarchy. Next, there is the fact that the data center boom is crowding out investment in almost everything else, yet data centers employ hardly any workers. Third, I’m worried about the high probability that AI looks like a bubble, particularly given the sheer size of the AI boom. If it is indeed a bubble, it will inevitably burst and will probably plunge the U.S. economy back into a liquidity trap due to its size.

Oh, and Anthropic tells me that AI may well wipe out the human race, which is why I should invest in the company’s IPO.

But I guess I haven’t been talking enough to the technologists, because I wasn’t aware until last week of the strong possibility that AI will render the internet as we know it unusable — not at some point in the distant future, but in a matter of months.

He then describes the recent PHP issue, in which AI discovered a vulnerability with that computer language that had not previously been seen. At the same time, Krugman fears, AI can be skilled at exploiting such vulnerabilities.

So what are we going to do? I don’t think we’ll be going back to carbon paper and filing cabinets. For the most part we probably won’t even have to rely on air-gapped local networks that are fully cut off from the internet. Azhar thinks that we’ll move instead to a system of partially closed domains, like AOL in its early years or the SABRE system used by travel agents, which are difficult but not impossible for people and institutions outside those domains to access.

Such closed domains are often called “walled gardens,” but I’d suggest that a better analogy is “gated communities,” like the one my late parents lived in toward the end of their lives. People who didn’t live in their community could visit them, but only if my parents had provided their names to the staff manning the gate. It worked — they could invite friends from outside over — but it was annoying and time-consuming compared with life outside the gates, where everyone could come and go freely.

Could we go back? Possibly. I’m reminded yet again of William Gibson’s quote (to keep the tie) “The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed”. That’s true is some senses, but perhaps not in many senses that most of us (and certainly not MAGA) realizes.

\\\\\\

From the populist fringe.

We’re pretty sure they’ve never read George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, but Orwell was prescient to see how these tactics are used again and again.

JMG, today: Trump: “We Will Officially Ban Using The Term AI”

He thinks he can do that, does he?

And

Salon, Allan J.
