Sky Effects from Vandenberg

NASA would launch rockets from Vandenberg Air Force Base, northwest of Los Angeles some 150 miles, and would often do so around dusk. These would cause fantastic, colorful patterns of rocket exhaust in the sky, seen even from LA. Perhaps the dusk launches were deliberate specifically to see those patterns? Don’t know. Here are two, the first, in color, from Fall 1987, a one-second hand-held exposure; the second from Spring 1988, when for some reason I had a roll of black and white film in the camera. I was living in Tarzana at the time, same place I was when it snowed in early ’89
